Opera North

Welcome to the Opera North Horn Club

The club was formed in 1997 by Bob Ashworth, principal horn of the Orchestra of Opera North based in Leeds, and his horn section colleagues of the time (Dougie Scarfe, Maggie Houlding & Paul Kampen) to enable horn players of all ages and abilities to assemble on a regular basis to play in large ensembles. The opportunity to play in groups of up to 16 players would otherwise be extremely rare! Members come from all walks of life, both amateur and professional sides of music, and have ranged in age from 9 to over 75. On average meetings take place every two months depending a little on the Opera North schedule at the time.

Horn players of any ability may join up for a small yearly subscription fee (OAP & student concessions) which gives, in addition to free entry to all meetings, access to our newsletter

Apologies for the short notice but, due to adverse weather conditions, we have had to cancel the 5 February meeting at the Grand Theatre which was also to be the AGM. We will arrange another time asap so please watch this space.

A Horn Day, hosted by Janus Wadsworth will be held at Beverley Music Centre on Sunday May 27th with support from the British Horn Society, Windblowers of Nottingham and June Emerson Wind Music. Bob Ashworth and members of the horn section from the Orchestra of Opera North will be involved and it is hoped that it will be an opportunity for the ONHC to perform an item or two in the final concert in the late afternoon - at the moment repertoire being considered is 'A Portrait of Duke Ellington' and 'Sunday Song'. We will try to use the next two meetings as rehearsals for 27 May so do get along if you can.

Join us, update your membership details, access our extensive library, ask to receive our newsletter or for any further information please email: info@hornclub.co.uk
